Toys‘R’Us Fills Management Ranks

Wayne, N.J. — Toys“R”Us has added a trio of senior VPs to its executive ranks under recently appointed chairman/CEO Antonio Urcelay.

Among the additions, Debbie Lentz was named chief supply chain officer, with responsibility for U.S. distribution and customs compliance, global importing and exporting, fleet operations and domestic transportation. The former Kraft Foods logistics executive reports to Toys“R”Us U.S. president Hank Mullany.

Joe Venezia was put in charge of store operations, where he is tasked with “transforming the in-store experience through strong operations disciplines and customer service excellence,” while ensuring “a seamless in-store and online shopping experience through the company’s omnichannel offerings.” A former Walmart senior VP and Northeast division president, he too reports to Mullany.

Also joining the management team as human resources chief is Saks veteran Christine Morena, reporting to vice chairman Deb Derby.

“One of the key pillars of our ‘TRU Transformation’ strategy is to develop high-performing, highly engaged, diverse teams, and we are assembling talent that can help lead important areas of the business and offer fresh perspectives,” Urcelay said in a statement. “With these new leaders and our internal team, we are intensely focused on looking at every aspect of the business for process improvement in making the company fit for growth.”

The specialty chain, ranked 21st on TWICE’s Top 100 CE Retailers Report, reported a net loss of $148 million for its second quarter ended Aug. 2. Net sales rose 2.7 percent to $2.4 billion, and domestic comps increased 1.5 percent, driven by gains in the CE, video gaming, learning and core toy categories.

The company operates 877 Toys“R”Us and Babies“R”Us stores in the U.S., over 900 international and licensed stores worldwide, and owns the iconic FAO Schwarz brand and toy store on Fifth Avenue in New York.
