Dallas – AT&T will begin offering a ruggedized version of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S6 smartphone on June 12 on an exclusive basis as the carrier did with the ruggedized versions of the Galaxy S4 and S5.
The phone, called the Galaxy S6 active, incorporates all the performance and features of the Galaxy S 6 but adds water- and dust-proof protection. The phone meets U.S. military standard 810G for water-resistance and to withstand dust, shock, vibration, temperature extremes, humidity, and high altitude. Its IP68 rating enables it to be submersed in water up to 1.5m of water for up to 30 minutes. It is shock-resistant when dropped from four feet or less onto flat surface.
The price with contact is $199 and $694 without. On installment payment/phone-upgrade plans with $0 down, it will cost $23.17/ month for 30 months on the Next 24 plan, $28.96/month for 24 months on Next 18, or $34.75/month for 20 months on Next 12. Under the plans, users can turn in their phone for a new phone after 24, 18 and 12 months, respectively.
The phone will be available in camo white, camo blue or gray.
Like the S6, the Android 5.0.2 Lollipop phone features quad-HD (2560 by 1440) 557 PPI Super AMOLED 5.1-inch display, 64-bit octacore processor running at quad 2.1GHz plus quad 1.5GHz, 3GB RAM, Category 6 LTE for peak 300/50Mbps download and upload speeds, 32GB storage, 16- and 5-megpixel cameras, the WPC 1.1 and PMA 1.0 wireless-charging standards, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac with 2×2 MIMO, Bluetooth 4.1 LE, stereo Bluetooth with aptX, and ability to connect to fitness sensors via ANT+ wireless technology.
The front and rear cameras feature fast f/1.9 lenses on both front and rear cameras. The main camera adds auto real-time HDR, smart optical image stabilization (OIS), and IR detect white balance. A new quick-launch feature starts up the camera from any screen in 0.7 seconds when the user double clicks the home key button.
It also features HD Voice quality, but HD Voice is not available in all AT&T markets, and both parties must be using AT&T HD Voice-capable devices in an HD Voice market to hear the improvement in voice quality.
