LeapFrog Updates Kid Tablets

Emeryville, Calif. — LeapFrog Enterprises unveiled its newest kid tablets, the LeapPad3 and LeapPad Ultra XDi.

The LeapPad3 features a 5-inch screen with 480 by 272 resolution, Wi-Fi, 4GB of memory, 2-megapixel front- and rear-facing cameras, and a built-in lithium-ion battery with a six-hour battery life. Video is recorded in 480p. The tablet comes with 10 apps, said to have a $70 value.

The Ultra XDi has many of the same details as the LeapPad3, but it ups the specs to a 7-inch screen with 1,024 by 600 resolution and increases memory to 8GB. It also adds an MP3 player and an extra app.

Both devices can access the company’s Learning Library of apps, e-books, videos, games and music. They also feature a search engine, LeapSearch powered by Zui, meant to enable safe and age-appropriate web browsing for children who can’t yet read.

The tablets have peer-to-peer chat, allowing kids to chat or engage in multi-user game play with other LeapPad users.

The LeapPad3 will be available in August for a $99.99 suggested retail, while the Ultra XDi will be sold in the fall for $129. Both are geared toward children ages 3 to 9.
