Former Oppo exec Pete Lau, now CEO of smartphone start-up OnePlus, described competition within the Chinese mobile market as “very cruel” with “no bottom line at all.” Borrowing a Chinese saying, he told attendees at a tech conference on Friday that the country’s smartphone manufacturers “are competing to see who can take their pants off first.”
“How fierce is the competition in China’s smartphone market now? ‘To use a Chinese saying, it’s like Chinese smartphone makers are competing to see who can take their pants off first,’ said Pete Lau, founder and chief executive of Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus, referring to a metaphorical race to the bottom.”
